Hot chocolate, it's a science
So, as you know I chose to do a how to speech on the making of hot chocolate. Hot chocolate is a rare commodity that we all take for granted, and I wanted to teach those who didn't know how to make it, how to make it! Another thing that went into the decision to do my speech on hot chocolate is that I have made so many hot chocolates in my life, that I basically have it down to a science. Some people in our class are doing such dull topics and they are trying to memorize their speeches. I think that the key to this speech was to pick something you are comfortable with and that you could explain regularly, and just talk about it.
So, now I have to compare my speech to the rubric on ms. Guarino's blog. First off, I think that my speech greatly captured the attention of my audience. I believe that I was enthusiastic and kept my audience entertained and engaged, and to me I think that is half the battle. Secondly, I think that I was pretty clear with the fact that I was going to explain how to make hot chocolate. If I recall correctly, I literally said " today I'm going to teach you how to make hot chocolate". I do think that the topic was related to the audience, because quite frankly, hot chocolate is related to everyone plus it is getting cold outside and we wouldn't want anyone getting cold. Next I have to ask myself if I have " topic- credibility". Well... I am not really sure what that is, but I have made so many hot chocolates in my life that I don't think you could find anyone more credible on the making of hot chocolate than myself. I believe that I did preview what I was going to talk about when I said I was going to teach my audience how to make hot chocolate.
For the body, I must ask myself if I made my points clear, supported those points, whether my points were logically presented, and were the transitions clear and effective. I think I made all my points clear. I talked about the packet, the mug, the water, and the mixture of those elements. I supported those points by explaining where to get ies and what kind I would personally choose. I also believe that my points were logically presented and that my transitions were clear and effective. For the conclusion, I did properly transition by talking about the cold weather that is approaching. There was not a summary of the points but I think that my audience could make a hot chocolate blind folded with the instructions I had given. My call to action was very good, because I said it was getting cold outside and everyone should try to make their own hot chocolate.
I think that I organized my speech fairly well and that I had a very poised beginning. I believe that I made good eye contact and that I did my very best to control my posture and stop my swaying motion. My speaking rate was good I think, I didn't speak to fast or too slow and was appropriate as well as varied. I had minimum "ums" and had good use of pausing and I was very enthusiastic about my topic. My speech finished with a bang and I would want it any other way, and I am sad to day that I had no visual aids. But I could teach a blind man how to make hot chocolate and that for damn sure .

How to make a good hot chocolate
So imagine this, it's a bitter January afternoon, and your are freezing! You try to warm up by getting a couple blankets, but you are just cold to the core. Well I have the solution to all your problems, HOT CHOCOLATE! Today I am going to teach all of you how to make a good hot chocolate. you get home First, grab a mug. then you will need to get the hot chocolate Packet. Personally, I like Swiss miss with the little marshmallows in them but that's just me. Then once you have the packet, you need to warm up the water. I have also heard of people using milk, but I've always used water.
So you put the water in a pot or kettle and wait until it boils. Now up to this point you have your hot water, your packet of hot chocolate, and your mug. Now you rip open your packet, empty it into your mug, and fill your mug about 3/4 of the way full with water. You want to leave some room to put milk in so it isn't super hot and you don't burn your tongue.
Another option to put into mind is putting large marshmallows in your hot chocolate but I am biased because I love marshmallows. Now you have the information on how to make hot chocolate so go and make a cup, it's getting cold outside and hot chocolate is great for the cold weather!

1. How to play football
I believe that this would be a good topic for me because I have played football since I was 9 until last year on an organized team. I have also been watching football on TV and seeing my brothers play since I was very young. I have a very good grasp on how the game is suppose to be played, and the rules of the game. I also have first hand experience in playing football so I could share experiences that I have had while playing football. I can also say whether football is for you or not, football is something that I could easily give a speech on.
2. How to play baseball
I believe that this would be a good topic because like football I have played and watched baseball for a very long time. I know all the rules of baseball and still play to this day. I also am a pitcher so I can give specifics on how to pitch. Baseball isn't that hard of a gem to understand, but there are a lot of details that not many people know.
3. How to swim
I think this would be a good topic because I have been swimming since I was 3 years old. Ive had a pool my whole life and also am a lifeguard. I believe that this gives me a good grasp on how to swim. I also have watched children being teaches how to swim and picked up some tips on how to teach it. And, the day camp I work at has a lot of kids that don't know how to swim, so I could tell people what it looks like when you don't know how to swim and begin to drown.

Debating at the speed of lightning
Our 3rd debate was not just any debate. It was a lighting round debate, meaning that we would have 1 minute of rout opening statement, 30 seconds for our rebuttal, and 1 minute for our closing. I was put up against Mazie and we flipped a coin to see who would choose the topic. I won the coin flip and chose the topic of legalizing marajuana. Mazie didn't want to do this one, so I thought of the next best topic which an innocent girl like Mazie would have no knowledge on and so I picked the abolishment of the death penalty. Although it was clear neither of us had great knowledge on the topic, I thought we had a pretty good and interesting debate. Mazie was for pro abolishment of he death penalty and I was against getting rid of it.
Mazie started by saying how everyone deserves a second chance which is good ethos and went on to talk about how it would still be an awful punishment. She also talked about how the death penalty for people who committed these types of crimes was an easy way out and they should have to rot in prison which I do agree with. Then it was my turn to do my opening statement. I started by talking about the petit murder in Cheshire. How the home invasion happened and how the girls were raped and burned to death while the father was beaten almost to death. I also talked about how it would save tax payer dollars. He getting rid of prisoners and having them face death for the acts that they have committed. I thought that we both had pretty strong points in our opening statement and that we were keeping it pretty interesting. Then came the rebuts. She came straight at me about how it would not be that substantial of a difference to the tax payers because it is a select few who are given the death penalty. She went on to say a bunch of other stuff but I don't really remember what it was. I rebutted the fact that all people deserve a second chance, and also talked about how if someone has the capability to kill and murder and rape, then they do not deserve the right to live. I talked about how it doesn't matter if they had all their life to re think their actions because the actions were already carried out and people were already dead or something bad enough to give the death penalty for.
Our closing statements were both good to start off, but neither of us really knew how to finish our thoughts in a smooth way. I really liked the lightning round debates. I think I liked them even better than the team debates. I was much more comfortable relying on myself for all 3 fazes of the debate and liked that I had nobody to blame but me if I did something wrong. I know I might be a biased opinion, but I'm pretty sure I won the debate by the way. I hope that we do more of these lighting round debates because they show how much people know off the top of their head, and how people can do under pressure.
